🤔 FAQs

These are the questions we are most frequently asked about making this Spicy Fresh Shrimp Ceviche recipe.

What is Ceviche?

Ceviche is a popular Latin dish in which the acidic juices from lemon or lime "cook" the raw shrimp or other type of seafood. There are many different types of ceviche, and this particular recipe resembles more of an Ecuadorian ceviche, which includes orange juice, ketchup or tomato juice, and a lot of the juice. Peruvian and Mexican ceviches are ore lime based, and include less juice in the final dish. These ceviche dishes are delicious, healthy, and full of flavor.

How long should shrimp sit in lime juice?

Shrimp needs to stay in the lime juice for at least 15 minutes but preferably an hour for the best flavor.

Does lime juice cook shrimp?

Yes, shrimp can indeed be cooked using lime juice. In fact dishes like ceviche are prepared this way! The acid in the limes denatures proteins just as it would if you were to heat them up - breaking down their structure and making for a more tender bite.

Is shrimp ceviche healthy?

Yes, shrimp ceviche is a healthy dish. It's packed with fresh veggies and spices, making it a delicious and nutritious meal. Plus, it's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • This dish is best served cold, so be sure to let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1-2 hours before serving.
  • Try to cut your vegetables to the same dish so that they soften evenly.
  • It's important to use the freshest shrimp that you can find in this dish for best taste.
  • I strongly recommend using fresh lime juice, don't use the juice from the bottle.
  • Serve with crackers or tortilla chips for a tasty dip or appetizer.

📚 Variations

This is an easy make ahead shrimp dish that you can make for family and/or guests.
  • If you are not a fan of spice, you can omit hot sauce or use less if you prefer.
  • Add more spice to this dish by adding diced jalapenos.
  • Instead of shrimp, you can use white fish or bay scallops for a different twist on this recipe.
  • Instead of tomatoes use diced mango, pineapple or your favorite tropical fruit.
  • Diced cucumber would also add a delicious flavor to this recipe.

🥫 Storage

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to one day.
