3. Store the apple pie spice in an airtight container or jar to use whenever needed.

🥫 Storage

Keep this apple pie spice in a sealed jar or container. Store it in a cool, dry place in your kitchen or pantry. It will last for up to a year. Give the spice blend a good shake or mix before you add it to your recipes.

Do not store this spice in the fridge. The moisture can make the spice blend damp. This dampness can lead to bacteria growth.

📚 Variations

  • Use this autumn spice blend in recipes that call for pumpkin pie spice when you don't have pumpkin pie spice on hand. It's a good substitute since this recipe includes ground cloves, a common spice found in pumpkin pie spice.
  • This recipe incorporates chai spices, such as cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon. You can leave out the cardamom and ginger if you want. However, cinnamon and nutmeg are essential for any apple pie spice blend.
  • Ground cloves can be left out of apple pie spice as it is usually a spice found in pumpkin pie spice. It does pack a punch of flavor, which is why I love to include it.
  • For a very simple apple pie spice mix, combine only nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • Homemade spices can last up to 3 years if stored properly. However, I suggest using them within a year for the best flavor in your recipes.
  • Spices are sensitive to light. This means their flavor can change when exposed to direct sunlight or humidity. This is why it's important to store spices and herbs in a cool, dry kitchen area, away from direct sunlight or heat.
  • Add uncooked grains of rice to the container of apple pie spice if you live in a hot and humid climate. The rice will help to absorb any moisture and prevent the spice blend from clumping.
  • Always use measuring spoons when making a spice mix. The correct amount of individual spices added is important for a balanced spice mix.
  • Only add the amount of apple pie spice that a recipe calls for. You can add more spice to recipes where you can taste, like sauces. However, it's harder to judge the final result in baked goods.
