🗝️ Recipe's key points

  • Using crescent roll dough keeps this recipe super quick and easy.
  • The cinnamon sugar syrup makes this apple dumpling recipe super rich and gooey and creates a perfect crust on top of the dumplings.
  • This is the perfect dessert for serving any time of year, and is especially perfect with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

You're going to love how the crescent roll dough creates a light and flaky crust around each slice of sweet apple. The syrup that they bake in is perfectly complemented by vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, making this the perfect dessert for any occasion.

  • Apples - We prefer Granny Smith apples, but you could do Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Gala, or any tart-sweet apples with a nice crispy crunch.
  • Refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Butter - Unsalted is the best to balance all the flavors. If you use salted, leave out the extra salt in the sauce.
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Light brown sugar
  • Apple brandy
  • Mountain Dew - The addition of Mountain Dew is surprising, we agree. But it blends with the cinnamon-sugar sauce for a seriously good syrup you'll want to lick from the baking dish.
  • Whipped cream- For the final topping, or you can use vanilla ice cream.

🗒 Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Collage of the first four steps to making the easy apple dumplings recipe.
  1. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 13x9 inch baking dish with cooking spray. Then, peel, core, and slice the apples into 8 pieces.
  2. Unroll the crescent dough and lay flat.
  3. Roll each apple slice in one piece of dough, starting at the wide end.
  4. Continue until all the apple slices have been rolled.
The second collage shows steps five through eight for making the easy apple dumplings dessert.
  1. Leave plenty of space as you lay each apple dumpling in the baking dish.
  2. Combine some of the brown sugar with the butter, cinnamon, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Stur until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a boil until slightly thickened.
  4. Stir in the apple brandy.
The third and final collage shows steps nine through twelve for the apple dumpling dessert recipe.
  1. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the easy apple dumplings.
  2. Pour the soda around the dumplings, being careful not to pour it directly on top of the dumplings. Sprinkle with remaining brown sugar.
  3. Bake until golden brown and until the apples are tender, about 35-40 minutes.
  4. Let the apple dumpling cool slightly before serving them topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

🥫 Storage

Store the easy apple dumpling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, warm in the microwave or in a baking dish at 350 degrees F.

📚 Variations

  • Dip each apple slice in cinnamon sugar before rolling it for even more cinnamon spiced flavor.
  • Try these easy apple dumplings with Sprite or ginger ale instead of Mountain Dew for a different twist.
  • Use pear or fresh peaches instead of apples for a different twist on the fruit dumplings.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • For best results, use a tart apple variety like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples. Their firm texture and tangy flavor pair perfectly with the rich caramel sauce.
  • When rolling the apple slices in the crescent roll dough, be sure to wrap the dough tightly around the apple to prevent any gaps or openings during baking.
  • Pour the Mountain Dew around the dumplings, not directly over them, to avoid making the dough too soggy before baking.
  • For an extra crunchy topping, sprinkle some chopped pecans or walnuts over the dumplings before baking.

🤔 FAQs

Can I make these apple dumplings ahead of time?

While best served fresh out of the oven, you can prepare the dumplings up to a day in advance. Store them in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.

Can I use a different type of dough instead of crescent rolls?

Absolutely! You can try using puff pastry, pie crust, or even biscuit dough for a different texture and flavor. Just be sure to adjust the baking time accordingly.

Can I make these apple dumplings without alcohol?

If you prefer to omit the apple brandy, you can substitute it with an equal amount of apple cider or juice, or simply leave it out altogether.

Can I use a different type of soda?

Sure! Try them with Sprite, 7-Up, or ginger ale for a different flavor.
