🤔 FAQs
These are the questions we are most frequently asked about making holiday Nutter Butter cookie recipes.
Yes, they do! There are many varieties of Nutter Butters these days.
The flagship Nutter Butter that resembles an oversized peanut shell is still the bestseller. Other varieties of Nutter Butter have emerged over time, such as rectangular sandwich Nutter Butters and fudge-covered Nutter Butters.
Unfortunately, no. These sandwich cookies are loaded with sugar and are quite processed too. That said, they aren’t any more unhealthy than most sandwich cookies sold on the market these days.
Yes! The ingredients used to make commercial Nutter Butters are essentially vegan.
👩🏻🍳 Tips
- One standard package of candy eyes will usually allow you to make about 30 cookies, so you may need to buy a second package, especially if you plan on making more cookies or have the kids helping you.
- Keep your hand dry when applying the candy eyes; otherwise, they can smear.
- Use craft tweezers or tongs to help you place the candy eyes on the cookies with accuracy.
- A Ziploc bag can also be used instead of a piping bag.
- You’ll need to apply the candy eyes while the melted chocolate drizzle is still slightly wet so that the candy eyes stick to the cookies. If the candy eyes fall off, add some extra melted chocolate to the back of the candy eyes and stick them back on.
- If you plan to freeze these treats, remember that the freezing and thawing process can cause the candy eyes to smear.
📚 Variations
- I’ve used almond bark in this recipe for coating the Nutter Butter cookies as it melts into a smooth consistency without the need for oil. If you decide to use white chocolate chips, you may need to mix in some oil so that you don’t get any lumps in the mixture.
- For gluten-free Halloween cookie mummies, use gluten-free cookie sandwiches. Unfortunately, Nutter Butter cookies are not gluten-free.
- You can also make these mummy-style cookies with different cookies such as Oreos or homemade sandwich cookies.
- You can use black frosting instead of candy eyes to make the eyes of these cookie mummies.
🥫 Storage
Store these Nutter Butter Mummies in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze these cookies for up to one month.
Remember that the longer these Nutter Butter Mummies are stored, the softer they will become.
