🤔 FAQs
These are the questions we are most frequently asked about making Blackened Mahi Mahi Tacos.
First melt the butter and oil in the skillet. Then immediately add the blackened seasoned fish fillets. Cook the fillets, flipping only once until the flesh is “blackened” or charred, about 4 minutes per side. Let cool a few minutes, then cut the fillets into desired pieces. Serve on warmed tortillas with your favorite toppings.
White-fleshed, mild, saltwater fish. Whether it's snapper, mahi mahi, grouper, flounder, halibut or cod, wild, local fish are the tastiest choice for blackened tacos or Baja-style tacos.
Salmon. Salmon isn't necessarily traditional, but there's no reason you can't wrap it in tortillas. Salmon is naturally fatty making for a moist and flavorful fish taco.
Farmed freshwater fish such as tilapia, even catfish.
Pat the mahi mahi fillets dry with a paper towel. Sprinkle all sides with the seasoning mix and press the seasoning in with your hands or spatula. Heat a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add butter and oil, then add the fish. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes on each side until an instant read thermometer reads 145°F when inserted into the thickest part of the fillets
A fruit salsa that's light, fresh, juicy, is a fantastic addition to counterbalance the heat from the blackened mahi mahi. Other favorite sides and toppings we like to serve: cilantro lime rice, sour cream, and fresh avocado. You could also serve this with a fresh Tex-Mex corn cabbage slaw, that would be amazing! As far as vegetables, anything goes fresh salads are always winners.
👩🏻🍳 Tips
Here are some tips to perfectly make your blackened mahi-mahi taco recipe.
- When cooking mahi-mahi, make sure you don't overcook it as it can make the meat dry. Cook each side for 5 minutes, or use a meat thermometer to see whether the fillet is cooked or not. It will read 145℉ when the fish is ready.
- To coat the mahi-mahi fillet with seasoning, first pat the seasoning onto the fish. Then, rub it in to ensure the fillet is evenly covered.
- The pan should be really hot when you melt the butter and add the fish.
- Don't turn the mahi-mahi fillets more than once. Let one side cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown before flipping it.
- When reheating your mahi fillets, use an air fryer for best results.
📚 Variations
This is my go-to blackened mahi taco recipe. But, if you'd like to add some more flavor to it, here are some variations to the recipe:
- For a more spicy and hot flavor, you can drizzle Habañero pepper sauce on your tacos.
- Instead of sliced avocados, you can use Avocado Cream Salsa.
- If you're not exactly a fan of sour cream, you can switch it with this creamy Chipotle Sauce and shredded cheese.
- Using our Tex-Mex Slaw instead of plain cabbage slaw can also enhance the flavor of the blackened mahi-mahi tacos.
- You can also use my special taco seasoning mix or the Southwest seasoning and rub spice blend instead of the blackened seasoning if you want to do a variety of taco flavors.
🥫 Storage
Store the cooked blackened mahi-mahi in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking in an air-tight container. Alternatively, you can also wrap it tightly in heavy-duty aluminum foil.
You mahi-mahi is good to eat for 3 days.
If you want to freeze cooked mahi-mahi, wrap it tightly in a freezer-safe bag. This will help prevent freezer burn. You can freeze it for up to 2 months. You can thaw and reheat it when you feel like making blackened mahi-mahi tacos again.
