🗒 Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Collage of the first four steps to preparing the seafood casserole.
  1. Boil cubed potatoes in a large pot until fork tender (about 15-20 minutes). Drain the water.
  2. Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, and salt, until smooth and creamy.
  3. Set the mash aside.
  4. Add butter to a large skillet and melt over medium heat.
Collage of steps five through eight to making the fish pie inspired by the Irish Cottage pie.
  1. Add the carrots, green onions, and garlic.
  2. Cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the veggies and stir. The raw flour smell should disappear after 2 minutes.
  4. Slowly pour in the remaining milk, whisking continuously until smooth and thick, about 3 minutes.
Collage of steps nine through twelve on how to make a fisherman's pie like the British cottage pie.
  1. Add shredded cheese, mustard, and dill to the sauce.
  2. Stir until the cheese melts and then add the fish, gently stirring and cooking until it begins to warm, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Stir in the peas and season with the remaining salt and pepper.
  4. Pour the filling into a casserole dish. I’ve used a 9x13-inch ovenproof dish.
Collage of the last two steps to making the seafood pie before placing it in the oven.
  1. Top the filling with mashed potatoes. Smooth it out with a spoon and rough up the top slightly with a fork.
  2. Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheddar cheese.

Once your family tastes this Cod casserole, they'll say they never knew fish could taste this good in a pie.
  1. Bake the fisherman’s pie at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes. Sprinkle the top with chopped dill and serve!

🥫 Storage

Store leftover Fisherman’s pie in the casserole dish, covered, or in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat single portions in the microwave on high or in the oven for 20-25 minutes at 400 degrees F when reheating larger portions.

Technically, you can freeze this dish pie, although I don’t recommend freezing it since the fish will release liquid from the freezing and thawing process, and mashed potato also changes in texture from this process.

📚 Variations

  • Experiment with different types of fish, such as cod, halibut, haddock and salmon, or a mixture of these.
  • Use yellow mustard instead of Dijon mustard, if you prefer.
  • Add other veggies to this sea pie, such as spinach, kale, sweetcorn, chopped florets of broccoli or cauliflower, and celery.
  • Make this dish gluten-free by making a cornstarch slurry instead of using regular flour to thicken the sauce.
  • Chopped chives are a great substitute for dill.
  • Top this fish pie with mashed sweet potatoes instead of regular mashed potatoes.
  • Add shrimp to your fisherman’s pie for a more intense seafood version.

Sometimes, we like to forget the beef, and we're all about the fish in this delicious seafood cottage pie.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • Make this fish pie in advance by assembling without baking. Cover the assembled pie with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for a day or two. Bake the pie just before serving.
  • Regardless of the type of fish used for your pie, make sure that it’s boneless to avoid any issues and choking hazards.
  • It’s important to drain the boiled potatoes well before making the mash, or this can add unnecessary liquid to the fish pie.
  • Your fish must not have a “fishy” smell when you purchase it, or it could be an indicator that it isn't fresh. Always check fish and seafood is fresh to avoid food poisoning.
  • Frozen fish filets can be used in this fish pie.
