🤔 FAQs

These are the questions we are most frequently asked about making Ground Beef Stroganoff with Mushrooms recipe.

What is stroganoff sauce made of?

Stroganoff sauce is traditionally made with beef stock, mushrooms, and sour cream. However, there are many variations of this sauce, and some recipes call for different ingredients, such as onions, garlic, tomato paste, and red wine.

How do you make beef stroganoff not chewy?

To make sure that your beef stroganoff is not chewy, make sure to cook the beef until it is very tender. Make sure your beef is cooked all the way through.

What can you use instead of sour cream in beef stroganoff?

If you are looking for a sour cream substitute, you could try using plain yogurt, crème fraîche, or even cottage cheese. These substitutes will still give you the creamy texture that you are looking for in your stroganoff sauce.

Can I use cream instead of sour cream in stroganoff?

Yes, you can use cream instead of sour cream in stroganoff. The cream will give the sauce a richer flavor and a thicker consistency.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • Do not overcook the beef, or it will become tough. Cook it until it is just brown.
  • Add the mushrooms towards the end of cooking so they do not get overcooked.
  • Stir in the sour cream at the very end so it does not curdle.
  • If your family is not a fan of mushrooms then leave them out.
  • Not a fan of onions? You can use onion powder and still get the delicious flavor without the texture of the onions.

📚 Variations

  • If you want a thinner sauce, add some extra beef broth or water.
  • To thicken the sauce, you can add some flour or cornstarch.
  • If you want a richer flavor, you can add some red wine to the sauce.
  • Add more flavor to your sauce by adding a dash of Worchester sauce to your ground beef.

🥫 Storage

While this meal is best served fresh, you can store leftover beef stroganoff with ground beef can be stored in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container.

Reheating: Reheat in a skillet on the stovetop. Add a small amount of beef broth or milk to make your dish creamy again if needed. You can also reheat in the microwave at 50% power for one to two minutes or until warm all the way through.

I don't recommend freezing this recipe, because the sour cream and the pasta do not thaw well.
