  • Milk chocolate morsels -- we use Nestle's Toll House brand. These milk chocolate morsels melt beautifully and are great for melting.
  • Cool Whip -- used the brand.
  • Dark chocolate melting wafers -- Ghirardelli is a reliable brand and that's the one we used.
  • Decorations for the candy (optional)

🗒 Instructions

Note: This is an overview of the instructions. The full instructions are in the recipe card below.

Collage of first four steps to making the Chocolate truffle candy.
  1. In a medium-size glass bowl that's microwave safe, melt milk chocolate chips for one minute on high power. Stir and microwave again for another 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. If the chocolate is not completely melted, heat for another 15 seconds).
  2. Allow to cool to room temperature, about 15 - 20 minutes.
  3. In a large glass bowl, gently fold together the cooled melted milk chocolate with the room temperature Cool Whip.
  4. As you combine the two you may see that the chocolate hardens into tiny bits. That's okay, keep folding until the of the chocolate and Cool Whip has been combined.
Second set of instructions to making the cool whip frozen chocolate truffles.

10. Remove candy from the freezer and dip it into melted dark chocolate. Place each truffle bite on parchment paper and allow to set. Store the chocolate candy truffles in the freezer until ready to serve. They are best served cold. The chocolate truffle bites can be stored for up to 30 days!

🤔 FAQs

These are the questions we are most frequently asked about making Chocolate Truffle Bites.

Can I use real whipped cream instead of Cool Whip?

No. Cool whip and like brands are considered stabilized whipped cream. Their makeup is entirely different than fresh or canned whipped cream. In this candy recipe, the two are not interchangeable.

How long can I keep the Chocolate Truffle Cool Whip candy?

I haven't been able to test this out because we can never keep the truffles longer than a week or two. But it should keep for up to 30 days.

How do I store the Cool Whip Chocolate Truffles?

Keep them in an airtight plastic container, the layers separated with parchment paper. Or you can keep them in a freezer bag but we like to separate the layers. The candy is best kept cold.

Do I have to use your brand of chocolate?

No, you don't. You can swap out other types of chocolate but I believe that the milk chocolate morsels are the best for melting and consistency. You may also use white chocolate for dipping, that's up to you.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • Be sure to allow your chocolate chips to cool before adding in the Cool Whip. Otherwise, the Cool Whip will melt and your candy will not set up.
  • These Chocolate Truffles need to remain cold at all times, so be sure to store them in the freezer until you are ready to enjoy them.
  • There is no need to "thaw" these sweet treats, you can enjoy them straight from the freezer.

📚 Variations

  • You can use any type of sprinkles on top of your soft candy bites to match the occasion.
  • Use melted candy wafers in a piping bag or storage bag with the tip cut off to drizzle the top of the chocolate truffles with additional chocolate. I think a white chocolate drizzle looks great on top of these.
  • You could also top these with crushed candy, or peppermints for additional flavors. Just be sure to add the crushed candy before the chocolate topping dries.
  • Make dark chocolate truffles by using dark chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate.
