🤔 FAQs

These are the questions we are most frequently asked about making an easy cream of mushroom green bean casserole recipe in a crockpot.

How do you prevent green bean casserole from being runny?

A thickener such as a cornstarch slurry can be added to the green bean casserole before topping the casserole with the remaining French fried onions.

Can you make green bean casserole the night before?

Absolutely! Cook the casserole the night before and store the slow cooker inner pot with lid in the refrigerator once the casserole has cooled. Leave the French fried onions off the top of the casserole until you’re ready to reheat this dish just before serving.

Can I make green bean casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it?

Yes. Cook the casserole as directed, leaving the French fried onion topping off and store in the refrigerator. Reheat and add the crispy French fried onions just before serving.

How do you cut green beans for casserole?

Make a uniform pile of fresh green beans and line up the ends, cutting them off. Do the same with the other side of the pile. Cut the trimmed green beans into bite-size pieces and proceed with the recipe.

When the oven is busy cooking up dinner, slow cooker green bean casserole is a meal saver.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • If you don’t have a slow cooker, make this casserole in a 9x13-inch casserole dish and bake in the oven at 350F for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Spraying the crockpot with non-stick cooking spray ensures that none of the ingredients stick to the pot while cooking and burn.
  • I don’t brown the fried onions before adding to the green bean mixture but you can if you’d prefer.
  • If you’d like to brown the French fried onion topping before serving and have an oven-safe inner pot lining with no plastic parts, add the pot to the oven set to broil for 2-3 minutes.

📚 Variations

  • Instead of cream of mushroom soup you could use cream of celery soup instead.
  • I’ve used simple seasoning in this recipe but you could experiment with other types of seasoning and spices such as Italian seasoning or add a kick of heat to the dish with red chili flakes.
  • Make this green bean casserole more decadent by folding in some shredded parmesan cheese and bacon into the creamy green bean mixture.
  • I’ve used canned green beans for convenience but you can also use fresh green beans (washed and trimmed) or frozen green beans that are first defrosted and drained of excess liquid.

We love those crunchy fried onions that tops our creamy mushroom crockpot green bean casserole.

🥫 Storage

Leftover crockpot green beans can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dish as green beans typically don’t hold up well in the freezer and the crispy French fried onions will also soften.
