Spice:

  • Butter - Butter adds a rich and creamy flavor to this bread. Make sure to use unsalted butter so you can control the amount of salt in the recipe.
  • Shelled Pistachios - These crunchy nuts add texture and a delicious nutty flavor to the bread. You can substitute with other nuts like walnuts or pecans if you prefer.
  • Ground turmeric - This orange spice not only adds a vibrant color but also has a warm, slightly bitter taste.
  • Ground cumin - A staple in many cuisines, ground cumin adds an earthy, smoky flavor to dishes. In this bread, it balances out the sweetness of the pumpkin and adds depth to the overall flavor.
  • Cayenne Pepper - This spicy red pepper adds a kick of heat to balance out the sweetness from the pumpkin puree. Feel free to adjust the amount according to your preference.

Batter:

  • Butter - In addition to adding flavor, butter also helps create a tender and moist texture in the bread. Make sure to use room temperature butter for easier mixing.
  • Granulated sugar - A classic ingredient in baking, sugar adds sweetness to the bread.
  • Eggs - Eggs provide structure and moisture to the batter. Make sure they are at room temperature before adding them in.
  • Pumpkin - A key ingredient in this recipe, pumpkin puree not only adds moisture but also a delicious pumpkin flavor. Make sure to use 100% pure canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling.
  • Water - Just a small amount of water is needed to help keep the bread moist.
  • Self-rising flour - Flour provides structure and texture to the bread. Be careful not to overmix when incorporating it into the batter.
  • Pumpkin pie spice is a mix of warm spices. It includes cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. These spices go perfectly with the flavor of pumpkin.

One bite, and you'll be hooked! This homemade quick bread recipe will convince you that pumpkin bread does not have to be sweet to be enjoyed.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • Measure your ingredients carefully to ensure the perfect texture and flavor in your bread. Baking is a science, so it's important to measure correctly.
  • Don’t overmix the batter once you’ve added the flour. Overmixing can lead to dense bread instead of a light and tender loaf.
  • If you’re using a glass or dark metal baking pan, lower the baking temperature by 25°F. This helps prevent the edges from getting too brown.
  • Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing to prevent it from crumbling. A little patience goes a long way!

🤔 FAQs

What flavor pairs well with pistachio?

Some popular options include chocolate or citrus flavors like orange and lemon, adding a refreshing tang. Vanilla and almond go well with pistachio's natural nuttiness. Spices like cardamom or cinnamon can enhance its earthy flavor.

Is pistachio French or Italian?

Pistachios are used in both French and Italian cuisines, so they’re beloved in both! You’ll often find pistachios in classic Italian gelato, biscotti, or desserts like cannoli. Meanwhile, French pastry chefs use pistachios in treats such as macarons, financiers, and Paris-Brest.

Why are pistachios so expensive?

Pistachios are considered a premium nut because of the labor-intensive process involved in growing and harvesting them. They require specific growing conditions, including warm climates with long, hot summers and cool winters. Additionally, pistachio trees take several years to mature and produce their first crop.

How many carbs are in pistachio bread?

The amount of carbs in pistachio bread can change based on the recipe. On average, a slice has about 20 to 25 grams of carbohydrates.
