  • Ground beef – The basis of the sauce. You can use regular ground beef or lean ground beef.
  • Onion, garlic – The aromatics of the sauce that add delicious depth of flavor.
  • Tomato sauce – Thickens the meat sauce and adds concentrated flavor.
  • V-8 Juice – This is canned vegetable juice, providing rich flavor to the cooking liquid.
  • Water
  • Kosher salt and Black pepper – Taste to test.
  • Sugar – Balances the acidity of the tomato sauce.
  • Chili powder – For a subtle kick of heat without being overpowering.
  • Dried oregano – Seasons the meat sauce.

The first four steps to making the homemade spaghetti with ground beef recipe in one pot.
  1. Cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic in a Dutch oven, stirring until the beef crumbles and is no longer pink.
  2. Drain the browned beef mixture and return back to the pan.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, juice, water, salt, pepper, sugar, chili powder, and dried oregano. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover, reduce the heat, and simmer, stirring often during the next 30 minutes.
  4. Add the pasta.
The last two steps to finishing up the comfort food pasta recipe made in one pot with ground beef.
  1. Cover and simmer, stirring often for the next 20 minutes or until the pasta is tender.
  2. Serve with grated Parmesan and fresh parsley, if desired.

🥫 Storage

Store leftover spaghetti with sauce in an airtight container. Keep it in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. Or freeze it for up to 3 months.

Reheat in a pan over medium-low with a splash or broth or water to loosen the pasta and sauce.

📚 Variations

  • You can use lean ground beef (85-90% lean) but the reduced-fat will mean less flavor in the sauce.
  • For a spicy spaghetti meat sauce, add extra chili powder or try hot sauce, sriracha, or cayenne pepper.
  • Feel free to add other veggies to the meat sauce, such as celery, carrot, green peppers, or mushrooms.
  • Instead of ground beef, consider making your meat sauce with ground pork, ground turkey, or Italian sausage.
  • Replace the water with low-sodium beef broth to add richness without extra salt.
  • Use other types of pasta as an easy way to adapt this dish. Make sure to follow the cooking time on the packaging directions.
Pasta is cooked in one pot with ground beef and a spicy tomato base, then served in pasta bowls.
This is the kind of dinner Mamma would approve of—simple ingredients, big flavor, and enough for everyone to gather around the table. ✨

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • For a thicker consistency in the meaty mixture, allow it to simmer for a little longer. Otherwise, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch and water to the sauce for thickening.
  • Use any leftover meat sauce to make easy Sloppy Joes. You can enjoy leftover meat sauce on baked potatoes or mashed potatoes. It’s also great in lasagna, on grilled cheese sandwiches, and on chili dogs.
  • If your spaghetti meat sauce feels too thick, don’t stress. Stir in a splash of water, broth, or extra V-8 juice. Add a little at a time until it’s just right.
  • Let the dish rest off the heat for 5 minutes before serving so the pasta absorbs extra flavor.
  • Cooking the pasta right in the sauce helps it soak up more flavor. It also saves you from washing an extra pot.

🤔 FAQs

Can you really cook spaghetti in one pot?

Yes! The spaghetti cooks right in the sauce, absorbing all the flavors as it softens. It’s a great way to boost taste while saving time and dishes.

Do I need to cook the pasta separately first?

Nope! That’s the beauty of this recipe. The pasta cooks directly in the liquid, making everything easier and more flavorful.

What does V8 juice add to the recipe?

V8 juice adds depth and a slightly richer vegetable flavor to the sauce. It enhances the overall taste without requiring extra ingredients.

Can I use a different type of pasta?

Yes! You can swap spaghetti for other pasta shapes like linguine or even short pasta. Just adjust cooking time as needed.

How do I keep the pasta from sticking?

Stir occasionally while it simmers, especially after adding the pasta. This helps keep everything evenly cooked and prevents sticking.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Absolutely! It reheats beautifully. Just add a splash of water or broth when reheating to loosen the sauce.

Can I make this recipe spicy?

Yes! Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or spicy paprika for extra heat.

📞 Chiacchierata (chat)

Ohhh amici, this is one of those recipes that just wraps you up like a warm hug—you know the kind I mean. 🍝✨ One pot, simple ingredients, and somehow it turns into the kind of dinner that has everyone asking, “Is there more?”

I love recipes like this because they ask so little of you. No juggling pots. No fussy steps. Just a good cucchiaio (wooden spoon), a cozy kitchen, and a little stirring. Then those gorgeous flavors melt together, piano piano—nice and slow. And that moment when the pasta soaks up all that rich, savory sauce? Mamma mia… that’s magic right there.

This is the kind of pasto(meal) you make on a busy Tuesday, but it tastes like you planned it all day. Serve it up in your favorite ciotola, sprinkle that Parmesan generously (we don’t measure formaggio here, right? 😉), and gather everyone around the table.

From my kitchen to yours… buon appetito, my friend. 💛
