It's a conspiracy . . . it really is. Everything in your modern day grocery store is deliberately arranged so that you'll spend the maximum amount of time and money in there. Think about it . . .
. . . the longer you are in that store. . .
. . .the more you are apt to impulse buy!
Everywhere you turn there are samples to try . . . the serpent in the garden of Eden . . .tempting you to take just one bite. You push your cart up and down the aisles and there are bargains that are fantastic but you really don't need and new incredible products that scream at you to just try me . . .take me home . . .I'll make your life easier . . . better . . .etc. From the minute you walk in the doors your senses are stimulated . . . the bakery is right there . . .the smell of fresh bread and pastries fill the air. . .and you say to yourself, I didn't think I was hungry . . .
. . .but the aroma. . .and the sight of all that delicious baked goods. . .I'm starving!
So, what are we to do? We have to have a strategy in place!! And that strategy is to have a list and follow the perimeter of the store. Once you by-pass the bakery, all the temptations are in the middle aisles. A list is a must and the list should follow the design of the perimeter. In the store, where I usually shop, the vegetables and fruit come right after the bakery and deli , then the meats, and finally the dairy. If you need something in a middle aisles then you should know where it's at and don't dawdle!! Most of the time I get my middle aisle things from a discount store and I stock up on the products. When I go to the regular grocery store it is for the fresh items I find on the perimeter.
I really like the small specialty stores they have in Italy and in some of the bigger city neighborhoods in The States. You can walk in, get exactly what you want without having to walk miles from one end of the store to the other. Some peoples may like the big box stores -- do we really need 200 kinds of breakfast cereal -- but I prefer the small personal markets. You can select what you want and be out of there in no time.
