The Healthier Way - Easy Homemade Granola

This is the ultimate homemade granola. It's easy to make and it's a delicious way to start your morning or to have as a snack. Make it clumpy or loose -- that's your preference but as a snack, we think it is best to leave clumpy. Makes a large batch so keep it in the freezer to have it on hand.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups Old Fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 ½ cups wheat germ
  • 1 ½ cups oat bran
  • 1 cup raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup chopped almonds
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup ground flax seed
  • ½ cup whole flax seed
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • ¾ cup brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ¾ cup honey
  • 1 cup extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups raisins or any other dried fruit that you like

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 300F. Spray a large baking sheet with vegetable oil. We used a 13 X 19 Wilton baking sheet. You can use two baking sheets and evenly divide the ingredients between the two.
  • Combine the oats, wheat germ, oat bran, sunflower seeds, flax, almonds, pecans, and walnuts in a large bowl.
  • Stir together the salt, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, extra virgin coconut oil, cinnamon, and vanilla in a deep saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat until it is bubbly and then cook two minutes more. Pour the liquid slowly over the dry ingredients and stir to coat. Spread the mixture out evenly on the baking sheet/sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until crispy and toasted, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Stir every 20 minutes. It should turn a golden brown. Cool the granola on a cooling rack, once it is cool stir in the dried fruit. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • We keep the granola in an airtight container in the freezer and it stays very fresh tasting.
